Conundrum (Dragonlance: The Age of Mortals)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Wizards of the Coast (December, 2001)
Average review score:

The book that drew me in...
Loved it...This was a thoroughly enjoyable novel, and a great addition to any DL collection. While some die hard fans may find some inconsistancy between the Conundrum in this book vs. the Conundrum in Weis & Hickman's War of Souls Trilogy, I didn't find anything worth throwing a temper tantrum over. If anything, this book will make you want to pay more attention to Conundrum when he appears throughout the War of Souls Trilogy. Jeff Crook has a great knack for Gnomish humor. As some of the situations the crew of the MNS Indistructible run into make others laugh out loud (or run for cover), the predominantly Gnomish crew takes their scientific expeditions very seriously, making it even funnier. Their Chief Engineer is also their Mishaps Guild representative!
I stopped reading DL novels a few years back but the War of Souls trilogy and books like Conundrum are bringing me back to Krynn. Kinda like visiting an old friend.

Covenants: Inspiring the Soul of Healing
Published in Paperback by Covenant Matters Press, Inc. (01 October, 2002)
Average review score:

A True Leader of Healthcare Reform"Covenants: Inspiring the Soul of Healing" could not have come at a better time! As healthcare consumers worldwide get more involved in their own healthcare - in both the choices they make and the consequences they risk - Dr. Crooks provides motivation and spirit to guide them forward. Her insight and well-informed view gives all "healers" (governments, providers, payors, manufacturers, and of course, patients - the ultimate healer of thyself) a creative and connected platform to rebuild the health relationships necessary for healthcare reform. I found value in the book as both a healthcare business woman and a consumer as well.
Finding the Heart in HealthcareThis book takes "Creating Covenants" to an entirely new level--adding both a global perspective and a call-to-action to the higher spirit in us all. Dr. Crooks again takes the complexities, rationalizations and schemes that exist to ration health care---and asks the reader to put them to a simple test. The test requires only that we ask whether or not the resources being applied are matched by the responsibilities being taken by the patient, the family/caregiver, the provider and the payer. This stunningly simple approach offers something positive for both the liberal and the libertarian---a new way to think about the funding and the delivery of healthcare. Dr. Crooks adds to this the compassion and "soul" for which she is so well-known to motivate us all to be better consumers or providers or payers of healthcare. The new ideas and global viewpoint make this a very worthy successor to "Creating Covenants".

Would-be master magician Kendar Gangle- and his earth-cat Scandal- must set things right. Before feathers stop flying, Kendar and Scandal will have to face an army of evil, murderous, pirate sheep, a visious fairy and a devilish dragon. Only Kendar's majyk cand stop this catastrophy- can he survive? Totally awesome!!! Do not miss this book for anything. I picked it up while library browsing and finished all 262 pages by the next morning. The ending was slightly dissapointing but the book is one of my favorites anyway. I've scoured the library for it's prequel but it's not there. My advice- just read it! It's also very, very funny.

On the Take: From Petty Crooks to Presidents
Published in Paperback by Indiana University Press (September, 1988)
Average review score:

Chambliss explodes the truth that others fear to whisper.Professor Chambliss bravely exposes crime and how it is allowed to operate in the big city of Seattle, and how it extends throughout the nation and other governments. When you read it, you will lose your naivity and your false sense of security, because you will learn how government really operates and for whom. It is the truth spoken when legislators can do nothing to rid the governments in WA state of their vipers, and out of fear one sent her own grandchildren to live in another state. This book is a must for all interested in the truth of political power. Look for it's sequel which is in the works, so says the grapevine.
A great overview of political corruption in SeattleThis book shows the level and complexity of organized crime and political corruption in the United States. Using Seattle, WA as a place of study, Chambliss looks at all levels of corruption in the city and the effect it has on poltical decision making leading up to the 1972 Grand Jury Indictment.

Above the Law: The Crooks, the Politicians, the Mounties, and Rod Stamler
Published in Paperback by McClelland & Stewart (January, 1995)
Average review score:

Important book, impressive author on Canadian issues.Maybe Canada isn't perfect after all. Palango shows some of my Country's warts but I am still glad to live here. He is a superlative investigative reporter and writer and it shows in this important work. Canada is a better Country for having him, and others like him, keep an eye on complex and often hidden issues.

The Athenian Democracy in the Age of Demosthenes: Structure, Principles, and Ideology

Average review score:

Politics and human rightsAs a student in Université Laval in Québec city (Canada), my teachers usually recommand books in our maternal language, french. But for this class titled The Athenian Democracy, our teacher recommanded this book. This book is a piece of art, a complete view of what might have been civil right and practice in Antiquity, in Athens, that is. I also recommad it for every people interested in ancient history and in, foremost, politics. Hansen reviews political practices with an continuous effort, respecting what were man, not only statistics or technics.

By Hook or by Crook: A Tale of Adventure Surviving Child Abuse
Published in Paperback by Dorrance Publishing Co (01 December, 1998)
Average review score:

An inspiring story of triumph over child abuseA true story that reads like fiction, "By Hook or by Crook" tells a compelling, inspiring story of two children who survived the trauma of child abuse. I particularly liked the upbeat quality of the book which shows how the author and her sister triumped over the terrible conditions of their childhood. The book kept me in constant suspense, as the children went from one unhappy situation to another.

Catching a Feather on a Fan: A Zen Retreat With Master Sheng Yen
Published in Paperback by Harper Collins - UK (November, 1991)
Average review score:

Exquisite! This is a book from which practitioners of all levels can pick up something useful. It contains the transcription of Master Sheng Yen's talks in the first retreat he conducted in Wales. Master Sheng Yen used the poem by Wang Ming as a starting point to help participants navigate their practice. Not only does the material clarify the practice of Chan (Zen) in very concrete terms, it also serves very well as a practical guide in daily life. His comments are insightful and in many occasions--moving. The editor povides a brief description of the daily routine as well as the rituals and chanting materials used in the retreat. Practitioners will also find the retreat reports interesting.

Eyewitnessed to the Indian Wars, 1865-1891: The Struggle for Apacheria (Eyewitnesses to the Indian Wars)
Published in Hardcover by Stackpole Books (April, 2001)
Average review score:

A Landmark in the Literature of the American WestThis marvelous book can safely be said to be the last word on the Apache Wars. The breadth and scope of the original accounts presented here - most drawn from obscure 19th Century sources - is remarkable. There are newspaper interviews with General George Crook, an account of the Chiricahua Apaches in captivity by Walter Reed (for whom Walter Reed Hospital is named), a visit with Cochise in his mountain stronghold by the teritorial governor of Arizona, and many, many more "you are there" accounts. Cozzens opens the work with an excellent historical overview of the Apache Wars. Indispensable to the Indian Wars affecionado!
Quickly (much too quickly) I became emotionally attached to most of the characters in this book; those foolish, scatter-brained, bumbling Gnomes, the very child-like yet irrepressably curious Kender. They all drew me into the story, and kept me interested in what would happen to them next- all the way to the last page.
Give this book a chance, you won't regret it...
